In workshops, production halls and on industrial sites, noise is not a temporary problem but a permanent one: saws, grinders, presses, compressors and extraction systems run in shift operation. Two groups are affected – employees at the workplace and neighbours of the company premises. Mobile acoustic panels and noise barrier walls solve both problems without any structural alterations.
Noise at the workplace: trigger values and obligations
The following refers to regulations in Germany; other countries apply their own limit values. The German Lärm- und Vibrations-Arbeitsschutzverordnung (occupational noise and vibration ordinance, implementing EU Directive 2003/10/EC) sets exposure action values: from a daily noise exposure level of 80 dB(A), hearing protection must be made available; from 85 dB(A), wearing it is mandatory and the employer must draw up a noise reduction programme. Technical measures at the source – enclosure, screening, absorption – take priority over personal protective equipment. The BAuA (German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) provides background information.
Noise emitted to the surroundings: TA Lärm
Towards the neighbourhood, commercial installations in Germany are subject to the immission guide values of the TA Lärm (Technical Instructions on Noise Abatement) – 65/50 dB(A) (day/night) in commercial zones, 60/45 dB(A) in mixed-use zones and 55/40 dB(A) in general residential zones. Outdoor installations such as compressors, chillers and extraction systems are typical sources.
Recommended solutions
- Mobile acoustic panel SILENCLOS®: free-standing, absorbent perimeter around noisy workstations – αw = 1 reduces reflections and reverberation in the hall.
- Outdoor noise barriers: permanent screening of installations on the company premises, mounted on screw foundations without concrete.
- Enclosure of units with noise barrier mats or panels (see noise control for generators and compressors).
- Lightweight noise barrier for rooftop installations for plant and equipment on the hall roof.
Frequently asked questions about noise control in workshops
When must the employer reduce noise?
Under the German regulations, a noise reduction programme is mandatory from a daily noise exposure level of 85 dB(A); technical measures take priority over hearing protection.
What does an absorbent panel achieve in the hall?
It not only lowers the level behind the panel but also reduces reflections and reverberation – the workstation itself becomes quieter.
Can the panels be moved during ongoing operation?
Yes, the panels are free-standing and can be moved by two people without tools.
Which guide values apply towards neighbours?
In Germany, those of the TA Lärm by zone type, e.g. 65/50 dB(A) in commercial zones and 55/40 dB(A) in general residential zones (day/night).
Are the products flame-retardant?
For indoor and industrial use we recommend the flame-retardant versions; test certificates are available on request.
