Road construction sites are linear sites: the noise source moves along with the work, and there are often homes, shops or medical practices on both sides. Asphalt milling machines, vibratory plates, rollers and pavers generate levels of 90 to 110 dB(A). Noise barrier mats on the site fence move with the works and shield residents exactly where work is under way.
Why mobile solutions for road construction?
- Relocatable: the mats are fixed with cable ties and moved on section by section together with the site fence.
- Combinable: noise barrier mats fit standard temporary fence panels (3.5 m panel width) and can be combined with traffic barriers and crowd-control barriers.
- Reusable: after the project, the mats are folded, palletised and used again on the next site.
- Advertising space: custom-printed on request – with your company logo or a message for residents (“We work quietly – thank you for your patience”).
How many mats do I need per 100 metres?
For 2 m high site fences with 3.5 m panels, around 29 standard mats (2 × 3.5 m) are needed per 100 linear metres; for both sides, 58 mats accordingly. The compact 2 × 1.2 m format is ideal for short sections and corners. The quantity calculator works out the exact requirement including height and format; the barrier calculator shows the shielding effect you can expect.
Legal framework
The following refers to regulations in Germany; other countries apply their own limit values. Construction sites in Germany are subject to the AVV Baulärm (General Administrative Regulation on Construction Noise) with guide values that depend on the type of area (details in our guide to construction noise). For the machinery used, the 32. BImSchV (Equipment and Machinery Noise Protection Ordinance) specifies which equipment may be operated in residential areas and at what times. Shielding with noise barrier mats is recognised as a measure in noise reduction plans.
Frequently asked questions about noise control in road construction
How many mats do I need per 100 m of site fence?
Around 29 standard mats (2 × 3.5 m) per side of the fence at 2 m height. At 4 m height the number doubles; the quantity calculator takes height, format and rounding up to whole mats into account.
How do the mats behave in wind on open roads?
Site fences fitted with mats present a surface to the wind. Use fence feet with ballast (e.g. concrete feet or sandbags) and additional bracing in exposed locations; the mats themselves are weatherproof and UV-resistant.
Is there a low-reflection version?
Our noise barrier mats insulate against sound and, thanks to their construction, are also sound-absorbing, so reflections towards the opposite side of the road remain low.
Can the mats be combined with traffic barriers?
Yes. The mats are attached to site fences behind or on top of traffic barriers; alternatively, mobile steel noise barriers can be used.
Can I have the mats printed?
Yes, on request we supply custom-printed noise barrier mats with your logo or a message for residents.
