Construction sites are not the only source of noise: the neighbour’s heat pump, your own pool pump, an air-conditioning unit, a busy road or the patio next door can all disturb your peace and sleep. With noise barrier walls, acoustic enclosures and noise barrier mats, the sound level in your garden can be reduced significantly – without a building permit for solid masonry walls.
Typical noise sources around the home
- Heat pump: The following refers to regulations in Germany; other countries apply their own limit values. Outdoor units must comply with the guide values of the TA Lärm (German technical instructions on noise) at the neighbour’s window (35 dB(A) at night in purely residential areas). An acoustic enclosure for heat pumps reduces the level by 12 to 18 dB.
- Pool and pond pumps, air-conditioning units: enclosure with clearance for air circulation (see noise control for generators).
- Road and neighbourhood noise: a noise barrier wall on the property boundary on screw foundations – no concrete foundation required.
- Temporary (construction phase, garden party): noise barrier mats on a construction site fence or on your existing garden fence.
What is realistic?
A wall or mat is effective when it breaks the line of sight between the noise source and the ear. At the property boundary, a reduction of 10 to 15 dB(A) is realistic – which corresponds to halving or even quartering the perceived loudness. The height should be at least 1.80 to 2 m; the barrier calculator shows what your setup will achieve. Note: for permanent walls in Germany, the state building codes (Landesbauordnungen) set boundary distances and height limits that vary by federal state; we will be happy to advise you.
Frequently asked questions
How loud may the neighbour’s heat pump be?
In Germany, the TA Lärm sets night-time guide values at the neighbour’s window of 35 dB(A) in purely residential areas and 40 dB(A) in general residential areas; other countries apply their own limit values. An acoustic enclosure is the most effective retrofit.
Do I need a permit for a noise barrier wall in my garden?
In Germany, depending on the federal state, fences and enclosures up to 1.80 or 2 m in height do not require a permit; boundary distances and the neighbour’s consent must be observed. We recommend a quick check with your local building authority.
Is a hedge just as effective?
No. Vegetation reduces sound only marginally; a dense, closed wall or mat is many times more effective.
Can I attach noise barrier mats to my garden fence?
Yes, to welded-mesh or chain-link fences using cable ties – as a temporary or permanent solution, optionally in a neutral colour or printed.
How much does a solution cost?
That depends on length, height and product. Tell us about your situation – we will prepare a no-obligation quote.
